Department of Education was established in 1974 as one among the pioneering departments under University of Calicut. Initially the deparment was housed in the ground floor of Language block of the university. In 2002 the department was shifted to Education complex as seen in the photograph. The department is located almost at the heart of the very vast and green campus of the university. The department is located in Malappuram district of the state of Kerala in south India, just 11 kilometres away from Calicut International airport, 12 kilometers to Parappanagadi, 13 kilometers to Ferok and 23 Kilometres to Calicut Railway stations. National highway 66 crosses through the university main campus. Initially the department conducted a unique course, Master of College Teaching (MCT). M.Ed. course was started in 1980. There were M.Ed. evening course and M.Ed. Vacation course for teachers in service, and M.Ed. (Tech), a course with specialisation in educational technology during the phases of growth of the department. The sanctioned strength for M.Ed course was initially 20. The strength was enhaced to 35 in accordance with NCTE regulations. The department at present conducting two year M.Ed. programme since 2015. The department organised many international, National, State and University level programmes in due course of development. Ministery of HRD has recognised the department as a National Centre for the in-service training of faculties in sciences, social sciences and Education, by the sanction of a Teaching Learning Centre (TLC), under PMMNMTT scheme in the year 2016.
