Department of Education, University of Calicut (DEUC) was established in1974. Late Professor C L Anand was the first Head of the department acted as the founder of the department. Later, he worked as Vice-Chancellor of Rajeev Gandhi University, Itanagar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi and North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. Department of Education, University of Calicut has launched several pioneering courses, made valuable contributions in bringing about reforms in university examination and developed several psychological and educational tools. The two pioneering courses offered in the early years were: Master of College Teaching (MCT) and Master of Education (a vacation course) and Self-financing Course in M.Ed. (Tech). This department has played a critical role in the implementation of the examination reforms program by designing and developing question banks for pre-degree and degree courses. The examination reforms program of the university served as a model for several other universities.

Later Master of Education course was started in regular stream followed by M.Ed. (Tech), under the self-financing stream. MEd. (Tech.) also was discontinued after few batches. M.Ed. became a two-year course in the academic year 2015-16. MHRD sanctioned a Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) to the department under Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMNMTT) in march 2016, as a national resource centre for conducting in-service courses to faculties in Science, Social science and Education.
